The “Transmission” Seminar Mission Statement
The idea of the “Transmission Seminar” was the direct product of the
presentation of the calligraphy “Ueshiba
Juku”
by Saotome Sensei to his senior direct students. It signifies the direct
line of transmission from O-Sensei through Saotome Sensei to his own
direct students.
I have taken this “transmission” very seriously. I have been given a
truly amazing gift by my teacher and I really believe that it is my
responsibility to find creative and effective ways to pass on what I
have received, thus keeping the “transmission” alive for another
generation.
Not everyone has been lucky enough to train directly under one of the
uchi deshi
students of the Aikido Founder. I have long thought that the larger
Aikido community of practitioners has been left out of the
“transmission” to some extent. Aikido has grown past the point at which
all the students get personal, hands on time with our major teachers.
While most of us who are part of the
Ueshiba Juku
have our own dojos and our own direct students, I
think that a broader system of mentorship is need to prevent a
dualistic hierarchy in which the folks at the top do quality Aikido and
the folks at the bottom simply exist to support the high level folks.
So the “Transmission Seminar” was created to be a vehicle through which
serious, up and coming instructors and practitioners of Aikido,
specifically our ASU folks (but not limited to them) can get personal
attention and instruction both on the areas I feel they need to address
but also in the areas they feel they need to work on themselves. The
training is intimate, intense and is designed to take folks up a another
level each time they attend.
If you have not received an “invitation” to attend one of these seminars
and are serious about attending, please contact George Ledyard at
